How Long Does It Take To Make A Anime

by Justin Sevakis,
Marker asked:

I have a pretty unproblematic question. About how long prior to a show ambulation does animation product starting time? Then not pre-production meetings or phonation acting or annihilation similar that, but the artists sitting down and drawing the whole dang matter. How much of a lead fourth dimension do these artists need to be able to produce a 12 episode anime? Is 24 episodes just twice equally much time? I realize each anime volition be unlike, but a rough approximate would exist interesting to know.

Unfortunately this is one of those questions where the reader is hoping for some definitive, hard and fast rule, and there basically isn't one. Anime product schedules are highly elastic, based on both the budget and the level of ambition of the product -- equally well equally, frankly, how organized and/or sane the people producing information technology are. Ideally, planning and pre-product (things similar writing, storyboarding, finding talent to exist on staff for the project, pattern work, etc.) starts a yr or more than before the offset episode is scheduled to air. The first fleck of animation is a little difficult to pin down, since some test blitheness is ofttimes washed early on on by the core team of animators, both for promotion and to concenter investment in the projection. Some of this animation usually finds its mode into the last production.

In most cases, there are several teams of animators that each take on one episode at a time, and rotate between them equally their schedules allow. (Shirobako has a great depiction of this.) Every bit i episode is finished, the team moves onto the next episode in their pile. Unfortunately that means that if they're running belatedly on one episode, the next one gets a later on offset, so scheduling issues tend to cascade, resulting in product running notoriously behind schedule towards the end of a run. Occasionally a special team volition be brought in to do a single episode, either as a compression-hitter, or every bit a special consequence.

Sometimes, a really aggressive bear witness volition allot three months or more of product to each episode, but that's not the norm for virtually anime. For an boilerplate Idiot box series (though once again this is by no ways definitive) each team will start with two months or more to complete each episode, but after a few episodes schedule pitter-patter sets in, and start date will slip later and later. Some episodes will get seven weeks. And then vi. There are times when whole episodes are produced in as little every bit four or five weeks. With digital blitheness, it'south getting easier to cover up quick-and-shoddy animation with effects like lighting, mist, different coloring, and impressive-looking CG layers that are cleverly re-positioned and re-rendered from before episodes.

Yet another reminder that this business concern oftentimes flies by the seat of its pants.
